Use RMX’s Square Footage and Ink Usage Data To Build More Profitable Contracts

RMX Analytics

Dec 19, 2024

RMX’s TM-305s crush the competition when it comes to square footage output. But they fall short on total ink usage. Let’s find out why and what we can learn from the data.

If you joined us for the RMX Analytics webinar, you’ll remember the bar charts covering low-volume TM-305s that were online continuously for 365 days. We compared the 96 TM-305s in RMX’s fleet to another pool of 96 TM-305s outside of the RMX Network. When looking at square footage, the RMX fleet was crushing the competition. But when it came to ink usage, the other TM-305s handedly outpaced the RMX printers.

We suspected that the RMX printers had been placed primarily in AEC offices and therefore printed more line drawings and less color graphics, leading to high numbers in square-footage but low numbers in ink usage. Whereas the TM-305s outside of RMX were more likely to be placed in traditional ‘copier dealer’ locations like corporate and education, where a wider variety of documents are produced.

Well, we dug a little deeper and it turns out we were right. Non-RMX dealers are placing TM-305s in a wider variety of industries than RMX Partners. Earth-shattering, right? Yes, RMX Partners could be selling outside of the AEC vertical, but there is more to this story.

Are you familiar with Canon Duty Counters? This is Canon’s answer for variable cost contracts, similar to HP’s Print Categories. We thin-sliced this data set again and compared duty counter totals on RMX TM-305 printers to the Non-RMX printers, and here’s what we saw:

RMX customers print a ton of line drawings but non-RMX customers love printing with plenty of color. Here’s a link to the exact density range for each category, if you’re curious.

The real takeaway for RMX Partners is not just that you could be selling TM-305s (or any printer for that matter) outside of the AEC industry – more importantly, it’s that if you do, you had better place it on a variable cost contract like Canon Duty Counters.

Conveniently, Printerpoint collects Canon Duty Counters and you can generate bills based on them, or even send the duty counter reads straight to e-automate or whichever ERP system you use.

By the way, we did some more digging, and only 15% of RMX TM-305s (and only 30% of all RMX Canons) are set up to use Duty Counters!

So here is a little homework, if you have any Canon large format printers in Printerpoint, in your shop or at a customer site, go into Printerpoint and see what the usage looks like based on Duty Counters (here is how to do that).
